First Aid kits can save lives. Having a first aid kit is the first step to being prepared for a medical emergency but it's only by keeping your first aid kit well maintained and properly stocked that you can enjoy peace of mind.

It's easy to buy a kit, put it away in a safe place, and forget about it. After all, most of us never really think we're going to need them. However, when first aid items expire or deteriorate there's no certainty that they'll work when an emergency happens and someone's life may depend on them.

It's only by regularly checking your first aid kit that you'll know it's always ready to use, so it's important to get into the habit. It's also recommended that you make sure the whole family knows where the first aid kits are kept and what they contain.

Keeping the contents of your first aid kits current is essential and make sure you replace any items as soon as possible after you've used them. If you haven't used the kit, choose a day every year to go through it carefully. Check that everything is in good working order, has not deteriorated and is within its expiry date. Make sure that sterile products are still sealed.

A good basic first aid kit checklist might include items such as crepe bandages, adhesive bandages, gauze pads, rolls of adhesive tape, a sterile eye pad, scissors, disposable gloves, tweezers, thermal blanket, safety pins, disposable resuscitation face shield, and antiseptic wipes.

The best way to feel confident using the items in your first aid kit, and to know what to do in an emergency, is to take a first aid course.
